The first night game in professional baseball was played 78 years ago today on 24 May 1935 at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. The Reds defeated the Phillies 2-1.
Larry MacPhail, who was the Reds GM at the time, pleaded with Reds executives install the lights, saying, "The Cincinnati franchise is in such perilous financial condition that it needs extra help. It's either light up or fold up." After the game, a baseball executive dismissed it as a fad. "It will never last once the novelty wears off."
